Chili Covered Watermelon Mexican Lollipop

I was out picking up parts at a warehouse today, and one of the counter guys, Eric, gave me a lollipop. So nice of him! Anyway, I wasn't quite ready to eat it yet so I popped it in my pocket and saved it for later.

A little later, I pulled the lollipop out of my pocket and was about to take off the wrapper to enjoy the sweet taste of fake watermelon flavor when I discovered that the lollipop was covered in spices. Errr...huh? Now I am familiar with mixing sweet with salty and spicy, but this was just kind of weird. It looked like chili powder and finely-ground oregano. So I set down the lollipop and walked away for awhile.

I came back, took a look at the label (it said Rebanaditas), took off the wrapper and stuck the candy in my mouth. And then took it right back out. I'm not going to say it was gross. But I will say that I threw it away.

What's the actual recipe for it? Like what does the ingredients on the outside say?

Here's a link to some info on it:

Well you have to grow up with it. I've lived in California my whole life and I personally love the candy. It's an acquired taste ;)

Found this post while searching for online source of watermelon/chili candies. The tienda in town carries them, but only one variety. They're DELICIOUS!!!

I tried it last week, from a mixcan friend. I love chili, but I found it... very special... not so good! lol
but this candy is actually very interesting! =)

Ezabora, I definitely agree that it was interesting :)

I guess it's one of those foods that you have to grow up with.

I'm Chinese, and there are weird foods (like fermented tofu) that I love because I've eaten it all my life, but try to get one of my friends to eat now...? Forget it!

Good for you for trying this weird lollipop!

I know this is strange, but I grew up in Santa Ana, CA and this lollipop is by far my favorite sweet ever. I crave it constantly and now like in South Carolina, I have to have my mother send them to me by mail ever so often just to get a taste of home. What is ever weirder, I barely eat any of the Watermelon sucker below the chili, I mostly just suck off all the otter parts. haha.

What a whoosy. That sucker is one of the best i ever had. I was actually looking for the receipe and I come across your comment on it. Instead of judging it and trying to be so called critique, take a seat and actually try and enjoy it. Enough said

Haha thank you for the feedback! I've had so many people tell me it's amazing that I think I will have to give it a try!
It's so funny what we grow up loving, right? As an Asian, I eat some crazy food that other people might be totally put off by, and I think THEY are crazy for not feeling the way I do.

I will definitely look for this lollipop and give it another chance :) if I ever find the recipe, I will let you know!
